Groundfish Ice Fishing Opens January 9, 2010 On The Canadian Saguenay

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Quebec Region, announces that the groundfish ice fishing season on the Saguenay River will open on January 9th, 2010, and close on March 12th, 2010.

In accordance with the current regulations and scientific advice, each person is allowed to catch a maximum of 5 groundfish per day of any type, with the exception of halibut, which must be returned to the water.

To ensure the sustainability of this resource and to allow the continuation of this activity in the future, fishers must abide by the regulation in force.

Moreover, information on the catches provided to DFO must be precise in order to make it possible for the Department to obtain a clear picture of the biomass and to avoid a closure of this activity due to a lack of data coming from the winter fishing effort.

For the safety of those participating in ice fishing, DFO emphasizes that access to fishing sites is conditional on ice thickness in accordance with municipal regulations.

Further, the Coast Guard strongly recommends that all pedestrians, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice during icebreaking activities as shifting ice may create a real danger for anyone in the area.

Please note that Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin on March 13th, 2010.

NHL to Canada: drop dead.

NHL to Canada: drop dead.

It’s over. Jim Balsillie is 0-3 in attempting to relocate failing NHL franchises to the land that loves hockey. Pittsburgh, Nashville, Phoenix. Don Quixote gave up his quest to move the fiscally hapless Coyotes to Steeltown yesterday, when a U.S. judge – a U.S. judge, a U.S.-headquartered league, 80% of the franchises are America, are you getting the picture? – rejected Balsillie’s bid. And, to be fair, a bid by the NHL itself, although His Honour encouraged the league to come back soon with a better bid. Balsillie he told to go ice fishing on Ellesmere Island and not darken his courtroom again.

Reading the Star’s Damien Cox on this today, I couldn’t help thinking of a Godfather scene where someone is patiently explaining that “It’s just business.”

True enough, as Damien explains:

“Having 24 U.S. owners in a 30-team league means very few will ever see the benefits of another team in Canada even if it means taking a shot in a U.S. city that has previously failed to support an NHL club…

“The league’s philosophical stance against allowing U.S. teams to move north was established decades ago…

“This, you should understand, isn’t anti-Canadian, really. It’s more a consistent expression by American businessmen that more Canadian teams don’t enhance their business.

“You’ll never convince an owner in L.A. or Dallas or New York that adding a team in a small Canadian market – and that’s all we have left – will put more people in his building or more money in his pocket.”

Will we ever get a seventh Canadian team? If greed prevails, possibly:

“Now expansion, that’s a different deal, and given that NHL owners have a pretty good idea that they could add a team in southern Ontario and make a cool $400 million or more out of the deal, it has a small chance somewhere in the future.”

Strange sight lights up Arctic Bay's Sky

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Residents of Arctic Bay awoke to a strange sight above the hamlet last week.

On  Jan 2 at about 7 a.m. a bright light streaked across the sky, leaving a trail of smoke behind it.

While most residents only caught its tail end, “one person actually saw it, and from what he was saying, the whole community was lit up as it passed,” said Joeli Qamanirq, the hamlet’s SAO. “That was the first time that ever happened in the community.”

Some Ikpiarjungmiut thought at first that it could be a fallen American spy satellite, according to Qamanirq.

A Greenlandic newspaper reported a similar occurrence on the same day.

According to the Semitsiaq article, the head of the Steno Museum planetarium believed it to be a meteor, which likely landed someplace in Northern Canada.
