Groundfish Ice Fishing Opens January 9, 2010 On The Canadian Saguenay

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Quebec Region, announces that the groundfish ice fishing season on the Saguenay River will open on January 9th, 2010, and close on March 12th, 2010.

In accordance with the current regulations and scientific advice, each person is allowed to catch a maximum of 5 groundfish per day of any type, with the exception of halibut, which must be returned to the water.

To ensure the sustainability of this resource and to allow the continuation of this activity in the future, fishers must abide by the regulation in force.

Moreover, information on the catches provided to DFO must be precise in order to make it possible for the Department to obtain a clear picture of the biomass and to avoid a closure of this activity due to a lack of data coming from the winter fishing effort.

For the safety of those participating in ice fishing, DFO emphasizes that access to fishing sites is conditional on ice thickness in accordance with municipal regulations.

Further, the Coast Guard strongly recommends that all pedestrians, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice during icebreaking activities as shifting ice may create a real danger for anyone in the area.

Please note that Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin on March 13th, 2010.

You Haven’t Fished Until You’ve Fished in Canada

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Canada is one of the most beautiful places to vacation; from some of the most beautiful scenery in the world to a very abundant fish and wildlife country. The Canadians take pride in their land and they are very helpful to the tourist who come to fish and hunt. If you love the outdoors, you’ll love the wide variety of rivers and ponds, freshwater lakes, and saltwater streams that Canada has to offer. Canada is the place to visit.

Canada’s wide variety of Salmon is what makes fishing enjoyable. There are Chum, Coho, Sockeye and the Chinook salmon in their lakes and streams and because Canada is so far north the temperature in those lakes and streams are efficient enough to keep the salmon plentiful year round. If you are not familiar with salmon fishing you can always purchase guides that specialize in salmon fishing. Be sure to find the guides that are written especially for Canada. These guides can also introduce you to the fishing population along all three coasts of Canada. The Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans offer a variety of salt water fishing that includes shark and tuna.

Canada is divided up into two types of fishing groups. You have Salt Water Fishing and Lake Water Fishing. You can purchase gear for both types of fishing in merchant shops all over Canada. So if you are not quite prepared for all of these types of fishing that Canada offers you always find what you need when you get there.

You’ll also find that you would like to experience Ice Fishing. Ice fishing requires special gear and safety regulations and clothing. So be sure to check on what Ice Fishing is all about while you are there.

When you go to Canada to fish, pick up your fishing license and asked for the guides that can tell you what is required of you when you fish, what Canada’s regulations are, the most popular type of fishing for the time of year you are there and what you need to do that type of fishing with and a map to find it.

Safe Snowmobiling

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

The roar of the engines, the sting of snow on your cheeks, the thrill of the air rushing past you: snowmobiling is an exhilarating sport. Manitoba is a snowmobiler’s paradise, where you are pretty well guaranteed to find snow anytime after December almost anywhere in the province.

Snowmobiling involves thousands of enthusiasts looking for safe trails. That’s one reason Snoman Inc. was born. Snoman Inc. is the trade name of the Snowmobilers of Manitoba, a non-profit organization representing over 51 snowmobile clubs that run a network of groomed trails across the province. The trails are safe and you won’t get lost.

Use of these trails requires a permit called a Snopass, and as of November 1, 2009, these permits can be purchased from any MPI agent.

Just to remind newcomers: You need a valid driver’s license to operate crossing a Manitoba road. Children 14 and under may only legally snowmobile under the supervision of an adult. Each snowmobile must be registered and carry liability coverage of at least $200,000. And finally, use of an approved helmet is mandatory.

To find out about trail conditions in Provincial Parks call (204)945-6784. You can check Snowman trails by calling (204) 940-7533 or visit their website at snoman.mb.ca.

Heat wave continues, high of nine expected

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

WINNIPEG – The November heat wave continues. Sunshine and above-normal temperatures are in the forecast for the entire week.

Environment Canada is calling for a high today of 9 C, with a low tonight of 1.

More of the same is in the forecast for Tuesday.

Environment Canada is predicting that the high will gradually slide downward as the week progresses and says there is a 30 per cent chance of flurries by Sunday.

But until then, there’s nothing but sunny skies.

Winnipeggers have been living in one of the country’s hot spots for days this month.

That’s right: Winnipeg, the city that normally sees the mercury hit a high of only -1 C — and has even seen the dumping of 35.2 cm of snow during 11 hours on Nov. 7 and 8, 1986 — is basking in a November heat wave with barely any precipitation.

Environment Canada meteorologist Dale Marciski said the mean temperature of 2.5 C so far this month is a far cry from the normal -5.3 C.

“But we haven’t broken any records,” Marciski said. “So far it has just been warm.”

The country’s weather guru, David Phillips, said most Canadians could be basking in nice winter weather because it’s an El Niño year, with winds from an abnormal warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean affecting our temperatures.

Phillips, hearing that a Winnipegger quickly broke a sweat kayaking on Lake Winnipeg last Wednesday, said, “Kayaking? Come on, it should almost be ice fishing at this time.”

But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end; Phillips said even with an El Niño, Canadians will still have winter.

“We are the second-coldest country in the world,” he said.

Icy Lines in Manitoba

Friday, April 10th, 2009

In Manitoba – there are still large areas by the Manitoba lakes – with areas of frigid temperature and lots and lots of snow and ice.  Its still ice fishing weather out there – that is until a real spring thaw thaws out that winter ice till the ice is not safe to travel on.  As an ice fisherman you should be long gone before that time period.  It never hurts to play it safe and pay your bills prudently , reports experienced Lake Manitoba fishing and hunting outfitter Jadran Transcona.

It may be spring thaw in the city of Winnipeg Canada and yet be frigid conditions still – winter time – alongside and in the lake areas of Manitoba – be it Lake Winnipeg , Lake Manitoba , the narrows or other of the well known ice fishing spots in the province of Manitoba.

To this end caution still comes into play .  Warm , moist air and freezing rain can cause a buildup of frost and ice on overhead Manitoba hydro power lines.  If the ice continues to build , hydro poles can break resulting in downed power lines and power outages – be it in Ashern , the lake manitoba narrows regions or elsewhere.

What can you do .  Manitoba hydro advises first of all to be on the lookout for ice buildup and if so report it by phone or email.  Stay clear of low or sagging power lines , do not travel under or near one, as it can be most dangerous.   In addition try to avoid travelling near crews that are in the process of clearing ice laden power lines.   Lastly never attempt to repair damaged power lines or remove tree limbs from power lines – no matter how experienced you think that you are – advises Transcona. .

Manitoba Winter Snow Safety

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

After a snow storm in the Manitoba winter there are a number of precautions to  deal with in terms of clearing away the snow and ice after a Manitoba winter storm.

First of all it is more than essential to   wear cold weather appropriate clothing like gloves, heavy coat and snow boots.

If heavy equipment or even snowmobiles , snowplows , ski-doos or even standard snow blowers are used it is always best to err on the side of caution and concern and wear earplugs or protective headphones to reduce risk from equipment noise. Equipment such as chain saws, backhoes and snow blowers may cause ringing in the ears and subsequent hearing damage.

In addition do not be a dufus -wear eye goggles while removing or cleaning up debris to prevent eye injuries.

Beware of Electrical Hazards

If snow/water is present anywhere near electrical circuits and electrical equipment, turn off the power at the main breaker or fuse on the service panel. Do not turn the power back on until electrical equipment has been inspected by a qualified electrician.

It is essential that when dealing with power and electricity to never touch electrical equipment if the ground is wet, unless you are certain that the power is off.

Of course stay away from downed hydro and power lines – especially near water and Lake Manitoba Narrows -  Never touch a downed power line.  When using gasoline and diesel generators to supply power to a building, switch the main breaker or fuse on the service panel to the off position prior to starting the generator.  If in doubt call the folks at Manitoba Hydro.

If clearing or other work must be performed near a downed power line, contact the utility company to discuss de-energizing and grounding or shielding of power lines. Extreme caution is necessary when moving ladders and other equipment near overhead power lines to avoid inadvertent contact.

Avoid Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is poisonous to breathe. During snow cleanup, operate all gasoline-powered devices such as generators outdoors and never bring them indoors. This will help to ensure your safety from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Prevent Muscle and Bone Injury

Special attention is needed to avoid back injuries associated with manual lifting and handling of debris and shoveling snow.

To help prevent muscle and bone injury:

* Use teams of two or more to move bulky objects.

* Avoid lifting any material that weighs more than 50 pounds.

* Use proper automated-assist lifting devices.

* Use caution or seek professional assistance when removing fallen trees, cleaning up debris or using equipment, such as chain saws.

* Wear eye goggles while removing or cleaning up debris to prevent eye injuries.

Candle Safety

* Use a flashlight instead of a candle whenever possible.

* Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep.

* Keep candles away from items that can catch fire such as clothing, books, curtains, or flammable liquids.

* Use candle holders that are sturdy, won’t tip over easily and are made from a material that can’t burn.

* Keep candles out of reach of children.

* Try to avoid carrying a lit candle.

* Never use a candle for a light when checking pilot lights or fueling equipment.

Reduce Risk of Heat Exhaustion and Cold Temperature Injuries

While cleaning up after the snow storm, you are at risk for developing health problems from working in cold environments.

* Wear rubber boots.

* Ensure that clothing and boots have adequate insulation.

* Take frequent breaks out of the water.

* Change into dry clothing when possible.

Food Safety Precautions

Perishable foods including meats, dairy products and eggs that haven’t been refrigerated for more than two hours should be discarded because they are no longer safe to consume.  Its not a long drive to the stores at Ashern.  Of course  foods that have been contaminated by flooding should also be discarded.

Be particularly careful to thoroughly disinfect surfaces that may come in contact with food, such as counter tops, pantry shelves, pots and pans, dishes and inside refrigerators, etc.
